Morocco Tour 9 - 
PORTUGUESE HERITAGE

 

  In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Atlantic ports of Morocco were occupied by the Portuguese who erected many ramparts and fortresses still in good conditions. We suggest an itinerary starting from Spanish harbour Algeciras combining historical aspects to beautiful landscapes of huge white sand beaches and beautiful sunsets on the Atlantic Ocean, with possibility to start from Casablanca in 5 days.

DAY 1 - ALGECIRAS / TANGIER
Arrival at Tangier's harbour. Welcome by our staff and transfer to your hotel. Lunch in a local restaurant, then visit of Tangier which was captured alternately by the Portuguese and the Spanish during the 15th and 16th centuries: the Kasbah, "Petit and Grand Socco" Cape Spartel and the grottoes of Hercules. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 2 - TANGIER / ASILAH / RABAT / CASABLANCA (380km/236 mi)
After breakfast, on to Asilah. The town was conquered in 1471 and became the Portuguese beach-head in Morocco. Visit of the ramparts and the old city. Charming city narrow streets and white washed walls. This resort is frequented by many talented artists. Then on to Rabat, the political capital of the Kingdom. Lunch in a local restaurant. Orientation tour : Hassan tower, Mohamed V Mausoleum, Oudayas kasbah, exterior of the Royal palace and Mechouar. Then on to Casablanca. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 3 - CASABLANCA / AZZEMOUR / EL JADIDA / OUALIDIA / SAFI (270 km/168 mi)

After breakfast, departure to Azzemour. Orientation tour around the kasbah and the Portuguese ramparts. Then on to El Jadida (ex Mazagan), visit of the beautiful cistern, the Portuguese ramparts and their 4 bastions. Then on to Oualidia, small fishermen's port also famous for its oyster farms. Fish lunch. Then on to Safi now a modern port, where Portuguese arrived in the 15th century and built huge fortifications. Visit of Kechla fortress and the ceramic museum, the castle of the Sea "Dar El Bahr" with its 17th century cannons. Panoramic view over the Atlantic. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 4 - SAFI / ESSAOUIRA / MARRAKESH (325 km/202 mi)
After breakfast, departure to Essaouira (ex Mogador). Visit of the fishermen's port, the kasbah and the ramparts, the marquetry workshops, the Mellah Jewish quarter. Lunch and then on to Marrakesh. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 5 - MARRAKESH
After breakfast, visit of Marrakesh : Koutoubia mosque, Saadians tombs, El Bahia palace, the medina, the Menara garden. Lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon, discovery of the colourful souks of Marrakesh and Djemaa El Fna square. Moroccan dinner under tents in the palm grove with show featuring folkloric groups and fantasia (horse cavalcade). Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 6 - MARRAKESH / CASABLANCA AIRPORT (285 km/177 mi)
After breakfast, transfer to Marrakesh airport or to Casablanca airport. Assistance to the boarding facilities and farewell from our staff.

Possibility to continue to Fez, Meknes, Volubilis and Casablanca or Agadir, or Tangier in 2 / 3 days.
